Which sites can Clipmoth save?
Every site on the web delivers media in one of a few patterns.
Here's what the extension handles, what needs the desktop app, and what no tool can save.
Most of the everyday web
If a page plays media without DRM, the extension detects and saves it. These four patterns cover the majority of sites — each has a hands-on practice page:
Big video & social platforms
Browser stores prohibit extensions from downloading from these sites, so the extension stays quiet there — by rule, not by bug. The Clipmoth desktop app for Windows handles them.
DRM-protected subscription services
These services are protected by DRM (Widevine / PlayReady / FairPlay). Bypassing that protection to download is illegal under copyright law, so Clipmoth won't do it — on purpose. Any tool that offers to is putting you at legal risk.
Why the difference?
AES-128 encryption (lesson 4) is a shared key your browser downloads — decryptable by design. DRM binds decryption to certified hardware and OS features, which no downloader can (or should) break.
And as always: only save content you own or have the right to keep. Compatibility is a technical statement, not a permission.
