The “ss” shortcut in a YouTube URL has historically led to SaveFrom.net. When it stops working, the cause may be a SaveFrom access restriction, a failed download, or a lookalike site. This guide explains how to tell them apart and introduces YouTube’s own download feature and other alternatives.
The quick answer
ss prefix has historically forwarded you to SaveFrom.net. So SSYouTube fails when SaveFrom fails, or when you landed on a lookalike site.- In the US: SaveFrom stopped serving US visitors in April 2020 (Computer Hope). No browser setting changes that.
- Address bar doesn't say savefrom.net: you are on a lookalike. Close it and install nothing it offers.
- What to use instead: YouTube Premium or Lite for offline viewing; yt-dlp with ffmpeg for a file you have the right to save.
What the “ss” shortcut is, and the lookalikes
Type ss before youtube in a watch URL and press Enter. ssyoutube.com has historically forwarded that request to SaveFrom.net with the video pre-filled, and SaveFrom has promoted the prefix for years. We have not verified who holds the domain today. Either way, there is no separate SSYouTube service to be “down.”
Search results also show .net, .online, .io and .app variants and “SSYouTube APK” pages. Most are not SaveFrom, some have been reported to push unwanted software, and we do not link to them. Signs you are on one:
- After the redirect, the address bar shows a domain other than savefrom.net.
- It asks you to install an extension, an APK or a “converter.” None is needed to download a public video.
- It asks for notification permission, which is an advertising channel.
- It offers an “official SSYouTube app.” There is none; Google Play does not carry YouTube downloaders.
Why the shortcut fails

Official options and terms
YouTube Premium includes in-app downloads: $15.99 a month in the US and $26.99 for a family plan (Tech Advisor), ¥1,280 in Japan. Premium Lite ($8.99; ¥780) added downloads on February 24, 2026, except for Shorts and music (YouTube's announcement). Downloads stay in the app and play while the device reconnects at least every 30 days.
Your own uploads download free from YouTube Studio, up to five times per video per day (YouTube Help).
The rules: YouTube's Terms of Service forbid downloading except through features YouTube provides, with written permission, or where the law allows. That covers SaveFrom and the ss shortcut, whatever the video's copyright status.

Terms and law in detail
A Creative Commons video saved through an online converter can be fine under copyright law and still breach YouTube's Terms. Terms are a contract, and YouTube's remedies run against your account.
- Downloading someone else's copyrighted video without permission can be infringement in most countries, whatever the tool.
- Some countries, Japan among them, make knowingly downloading infringing copies illegal even for private use.
- No tool below can or should be used on DRM-protected services such as Netflix or Prime Video.

- Browser extensions: Chrome Web Store policy bans YouTube downloaders, so an extension that claims to do it is breaking the rules or comes from outside the store.
- Online sites: Cobalt is open source and ad-free, but its public instance has had YouTube disabled since mid-2025 (GitHub issue).
When it doesn't work
- Read the address bar after the redirect. If it is not savefrom.net, close the tab.
- Check the video plays logged out in a private window. Private, age-restricted and members-only videos fail on every online tool.
- Use a clean URL:
youtube.com/watch?v=IDwithoutlist=,t=orsi=, then addss. - No page at all: a regional block or the US exit. A different tool, not a different browser, is the fix.
- Blank page or silent file: a private window with extensions off rules out ad blockers and stale cached scripts. A silent file is a video-only stream.
Frequently asked questions
Does ssyoutube work in the US with a VPN?
Sometimes, but we do not recommend it. VPN exit addresses sit in the datacenter ranges YouTube throttles, so it often trades one failure for another.
I installed an SSYouTube APK. What now?
Uninstall it, then check Settings → Apps → Special app access for accessibility and display-over-other-apps permissions. Those permissions are how adware draws fake buttons over real apps.
Why does the shortcut fail only on some videos?
Live streams and Premieres have no finished file until they end. Fresh uploads can lack the higher resolutions for several hours while YouTube finishes processing.
Are there other “ss”-style shortcuts?
Yes, other services use two- or three-letter prefixes typed before a domain. Each depends on one company keeping a redirect alive, so it dies when that company blocks a region or loses the domain.
