TikTok’s Save video feature adds a moving logo and the creator’s username to the file. Cobalt and yt-dlp can retrieve the version sent to the video player, which has no added overlay. This guide explains the difference, TikTok’s own options and the terms that apply when saving a video.
The quick answer
- One video: paste the link into Cobalt and keep the default. No account or install; the link goes to Cobalt’s server.
- Many videos, or a whole profile: yt-dlp, which saves the stream without the overlay by default.
- Your own videos: TikTok Studio on desktop, or TikTok’s own data download.

What “no watermark” means
The watermark is not part of the creator’s upload. TikTok renders it onto the copy it hands out through Save video, while the stream the in-app player uses has no overlay. Downloading “without watermark” means fetching that player stream, so nothing is cropped, blurred or lost.
Resolution is a separate matter. TikTok commonly serves 720p and, for many uploads, 1080p, and no tool can give you more. A site advertising “HD” is just picking the best of those.
Official options and terms
What TikTok itself offers:
- Save video: Share → Save video puts the clip in your camera roll with TikTok’s moving logo and the creator’s @username. It is the shortest route, and the only one inside the Terms.
- Creator control: creators can turn off Allow downloads per video or for the whole account, and Save video disappears. A third-party tool may still fetch it; treat that as a no.
- Your own videos: TikTok Studio on desktop offers downloads where TikTok allows it, and Settings and privacy → Account → Download your data exports your account.
- Favorites: the bookmark saves a pointer, not a file. It vanishes if the creator deletes the video or makes it private.
TikTok’s Terms grant a license to view content through the service and say you may not download content except through features TikTok provides. Read plainly, every third-party downloader, including the two we recommend, sits outside the Terms even when no copyright is infringed. Save only your own videos, videos whose creator gave permission, or Creative Commons material. We are not lawyers.
The Terms and copyright in detail
Two separate rulebooks apply. This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice.
- TikTok’s Terms. A breach is a contract matter between you and TikTok, not a copyright question. The usual consequence is action against your account rather than a lawsuit.
- Copyright. The creator owns the video, and the music is usually licensed to TikTok, not to you. Private copies are treated differently from country to country, but re-uploading, editing it into your own content or using it commercially without permission is infringement almost everywhere.
- Watermark removal. Stripping the watermark to pass a video off as yours adds a credit-removal problem on top.

- Online: Cobalt is open source, ad-free and needs no account; SnapTik, SSSTik and their copycats do the same fetch with ads.
- Command line: yt-dlp saves the stream without the overlay by default, lists every rendition with
yt-dlp -F, and handles whole profiles. - Desktop apps: Clipmoth is our own product; weigh that as you read. Its Windows app lets you paste a URL and choose the download quality, but it cannot get past DRM, logins, age gates or regional blocks.
- Browser extensions: they read tiktok.com inside your logged-in session; we have not tested any and name none.
snaptik.app and ssstik.io are the originals; lookalikes on .kim, .sbs, .cc and similar endings are copycats. Third-party reviews report that since late 2025 SnapTik’s free tier adds its own watermark and limits daily downloads, with paid plans of roughly $4.99–$9.99 a month for watermark-free files (Skrubly’s review, as of October 2026; we have not verified this). If the domain is neither of the two originals, you are not on the original site.
Install yt-dlp from the official instructions. A profile URL fetches the account’s public videos:

On iPhone, Cobalt’s file lands in Files → Downloads; tap Share → Save Video to move it to Photos.
When it doesn’t work
- The file has a watermark: you used TikTok’s Save video, or a site that adds its own. Try Cobalt with the same link.
- “Video unavailable”: removed, private or region-locked. If TikTok will not play it in a browser, no tool will.
- Only 720p: that is what TikTok serves for that upload. Check with
yt-dlp -Fbefore blaming the tool. - Slideshow saved as images: photo posts are images plus a sound, not a video. Cobalt shows a picker; combine them in an editor if you need an MP4.
- Private or age-restricted: only yt-dlp with cookies from an account that can already see the video works. Cobalt cannot.
Frequently asked questions
Are SnapTik and SSSTik safe?
snaptik.app and ssstik.io have been widely used for years; the risk reports mostly concern the copycat domains. Clone pages that ask you to install an app or APK are the clearest warning sign.
Can I save just the sound from a TikTok?
Yes: use Cobalt’s audio mode, or yt-dlp -x, which keeps the original AAC track in an .m4a file. Inside TikTok, tapping the spinning disc adds the sound to Favorites for reuse in your own videos.
Why won’t my downloaded TikTok open in my editor?
TikTok often serves H.265 alongside H.264, and some editors and older players cannot open H.265. Add -S vcodec:h264 to yt-dlp to prefer the H.264 version.
Can I download my own TikToks without a watermark?
Yes, through TikTok Studio, the data download, or Cobalt and yt-dlp on your own links. The best copy is still the original file on your device, because TikTok re-encodes every upload.
